Valory’s power is different . . . it’s dangerous, unruly, and destructive. But can she channel it to crush a cunning enemy and save the realm from chaos?

Welcome to Nissera, land of three kingdoms and home to spectacular magic.

A century after her legendary ancestors overcame a bloodthirsty tyrant, seventeen-year-old Valory Braiosa attends a training academy for elicromancers, immortal beings with magical gifts. Yet Valory’s immense power seems impossible to tame, and she faces imprisonment by the Nisseran authorities. Then a forbidden resurrection spell awakens a long-dormant evil, and Valory may be the only one who can vanquish this terrifying villain. Together with a band of allies—including an old friend; a haughty princess; and a mysterious, handsome stranger—Valory must learn to harness her power and fight back.

Weaving together her imaginative world of gritty fairytale magic with snippets from Beauty and the Beast and other classic stories, Hannah West’s dark and dangerous adventure is a gripping, immersive companion to her acclaimed debut, Kingdom of Ash and Briars. This richly packaged edition includes an illustrated family tree, detailed map, and embossed jacket with shimmering metallic effects.

Thank you to the publisher for providing me with an ARC.

Initial Thoughts:

I was in the mood for a YA fantasy story that was different than anything I had read so far and happened to discover the first book in The Nissera Chronicles, “Kingdom of Ash and Briars” which then led me to this companion novel, “Realm of Ruins”. The cover instantly drew me in and further convinced me that I needed to pick this up. This can be read as a standalone even though it’s within the same world as the first book.

Things I Liked:

I ended up enjoying this way more than I had initially expected! I loved how there were elements of The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast incorporated into the story, and the concept of a school to help students train and hone their magic abilities. It kind of gave me hints of Harry Potter in that sense but mixed with different fairy tale elements, too.

I adored the cast of characters, but especially Valory. It was wonderful seeing her character growth and development; I couldn’t help but cheer her on the entire way. I couldn’t help but find Valory endearing right from the beginning when she felt helpless and could only hope to possess magic, to someone struggling to control the immensity of it.

There was so shortage of action and adventure, and I kept anticipating what would happen next for most of the book. I really enjoyed the interesting world building and set up for the story in general, too. Everyone had a purpose and contributed to the story line and I thought that was so cool. I love it when I see everything falling into place, not necessarily perfectly but where they seemingly were meant to be.

Things I Disliked:

There were some moments where I found myself sort of getting a bit lost in the middle of the book, but it wasn’t too bad. I also wish the ending had less loose threads, but it could be intentional for a possible third book?

Final Thoughts:

Action-packed and filled with compelling characters, Realm of Ruins is a YA fantasy that is not to be missed! I’m definitely going to have to finish reading the first book now.
