Synopsis:

Cowritten by USA Today best-selling author Tara Sivec and award-winning narrator Andi Arndt, a hysterically funny, heartfelt romance about starting over and taking chances.

Nothing good ever comes from drinking a box of wine alone. So when I decided to entertain my drunken self by setting up some hand-me-down podcasting equipment and reading the steamy parts from romance novels, I never thought anyone would actually listen. The fact that I admitted my huge crush on my sexy next door neighbor made the whole thing even more mortifying. But sometimes life surprises you, and that’s how my podcast, Heidi’s Discount Erotica, was born.

Now I, Heidi Larsen, a sweet former kindergarten teacher in Waconia, Minnesota, lead a scandalous double life reading erotic novels to the listening world. And with each episode, I find myself embracing my new alter ego more and more. Now I’m starting to feel more comfortable in my own skin and do things I never would have dreamed of – like kissing my neighbor.

Look out, Waconia, because Heidi’s on the loose! She’s in your ears, in your hearts, and down your pants…wait, that didn’t sound as good as it did in my head. Well, you get the picture, don’tcha know!

Review:

Initial Thoughts:

I was browsing through Facebook and came upon a post someone made in one of the book groups I’m in. They were gushing about this new hilarious romance audio book that released recently and I got curious because 1) the cover was way different than any other romance audio book I’d seen before, 2) I had yet to read a hilarious romance and wanted to experience the level of hilarity and joy that woman was talking about, and lastly, 3) Andi Arndt is the co-author and narrator and she’s one of my favorites so I already knew the quality of the audio book was going to be amazing. Luckily, I had some Audible credits saved and immediately purchased the book minutes after.

Things I Liked:

This book was SO. HILARIOUS. There were times when I had to resist from laughing out loud because I was out in public and didn’t want to seem like a crazy person who just suddenly bursts out laughing herself to tears. I read somewhere that one of the authors – Tara Sivec – is known for writing incredibly funny stories, so consider this to be no different. I may just have to check out her other books if that’s the case. I could not stop smiling when reading this book; if I wasn’t laughing I was shaking my head and smiling at Heidi and all the shenanigans she’d find herself in.

laughing fall

I adored Heidi completely. It was wonderful seeing her journey of self-discovery and watch her change from a meek and shy girl, to become a confident and strong woman, who was not afraid to be her true self and to go after what she wanted. I really loved seeing how much she transformed after getting a job at an audio book recording studio and becoming close friends with one of her favorite authors and that author’s super hot and super famous actor husband. Literal #goals. It was also really cool seeing how an audio book was recorded, which I’m sure was portrayed fairly accurately being that one of my favorite narrators, Andi Arndt is the co-author.

I don’t think I need to mention the narration much because Andi Arndt always delivers superb performances in all the audio books I’ve listened to that she’s narrated. If you see that she’s one of the narrators for an audio book, you know the narration is going to be fantastic. I can’t sing her praises enough.

she's amazing vanessa

The romance between Heidi and her neighbor Brent was cute and, unsurprisingly, so funny. I loved their chemistry and how their relationship started and developed. I figured out the major plot twist fairly early on (it was pretty obvious), but that just heightened my anticipation of it and I totally didn’t mind realizing it so soon. The end was super cute, empowering, and so satisfying – I was so proud of Heidi and so happy for her!

Things I Disliked:

As amazing Brent was, as a character he was a little too unrealistically perfect. I would have liked to see him have more character development and more flaws.

My only other complaint is that the story overall felt a little too rushed and by the end, felt a bit superficial/surface level. Heidi was great but I wish there had been a little more depth to the story as a whole.

Final Thoughts:

Perfectly narrated by the amazing Andi Arndt, you won’t be able to listen to this audio book without smiling. A lovely self-discovery story that is equal parts rom-com and empowering feminist journey. Absolutely hilarious to the point of tears and stomach pains, Heidi’s Guide to Four Letter Words is an audio book experience that is not to be missed!
